Gustavus Woodson Smith (November 30, 1821 - June 24, 1896), more commonly known as G.W. Smith. He was a career United States Army officer who fought in the Mexican-American War, a civil engineer, and a major general in the Confederate States Army. On May 31, 1862 Smith briefly took command of what would become the Army of Northern Virginia after Gen. Joseph E. Johnston was wounded, due to his being the senior major general in Johnston's army. However, he suffered what was likely a nervous breakdown upon taking command and Jefferson Davis replaced him with Robert E. Lee the following day on June 1.

A Note on Image Quality:
The quality of historic images are subject to the capabilities of the original photographer and the limitations of photo technology prevalent during the time-period in which it was taken. Some historic images are very sharp and clear, while others may be blurred, cloudy, or over/under exposed. Many historical images were originally produced on glass plate negatives, giving some a scratched, spotted or crackled appearance if the plate was damaged.

Items are delivered via USPS First Class mail (2-5 business days) with no longer than one (1) day handling time. Your item should not be considered untimely unless it has not been delivered after one full week from your payment date. Is your transit packaging secure?
Great care will be taken to ensure that your item arrives in excellent condition. Prints are shipped flat on cardboard and sealed in a water-resistant envelope or, for posters or maps, a crush-resistant tube. We have shipped thousands of prints in this manner and found it to be very reliable. Because of this, we have every reason to believe our packaging methods are superior and can not be responsible for variables outside of our control (postal handlers and carriers, etc.). For maximum protection, shipping insurance is offered and recommended for an additional $2.00.
